North Dell

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 7 months ago

The village name 'Dell' means valley or glen and the village of North Dell is therefore north of the glen where the Dell River is situated.  The village of South Dell is south of the Dell River.

North Dell has 31 homes, mainly spread along the main road although several are found in Baile Gloum (travelling from Stornoway, turn left at the Church and carry on straight ahead) as well as in the 'sraid' and in the Mill road.

The local development company Iomairt Nis is situated in Ness Hall in North Dell.  As well as being the base for Iomairt Nis, Ness Hall (officially it is named as the Murdo MacAulay Memorial Hall and is also referred to as Dell Hall) is a hub for community development, with the local Community Co-ordinators office , Volunteer Centre, Learning Centre, Youth Cafe and Youth Club all based in the Hall.

North Dell is also home to the Cross Free Church (Continuing) (pictured below), Dell Mill, Ness Hall and Cross Primary School.

Next to Cross School is Riverside Recreation Park, which is a small play park and tarred football pitch for community and school use.
The North Dell Fank is found on the moor side of the road, near the south of the village and can be accessed via the peat road next to Taigh Cheocaidh.
As you enter North Dell, you will notice a round-about, apparently in the middle of no-where.  This was actually used as a site for a lighthouse during the Second World War and remains visible today.
Each year Ness F.C. hold an Inter-village football competition on Fivepenny Machair and North Dell have been extremely successful in recent years, winning the competition 4 years on the trot; 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.  Other villages would contest this is due to the tendancy of North Dell to cheat in these tournaments.
