Cross village lies to the south of Swainbost. This village has situated within its boundaries the main places of worship in the district of Ness. The Free Church of Scotland and Church of Scotland are situated in Cross, although they both have meeting houses in Lionel and South Dell, with the Free Church also having a meeting house in Galson.

 

The school, although situated in North Dell, is known as Cross School or Sgoil Chrois.

The weather is often temperamental in the islands and the story of Donald Mackay (Domhnall Chaluim Tuathanaich) formerly of 13 Cross and what happened during the storm of 1955 shows the very extremities of winter weather (story is in Gaelic but with English summary).
